Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana grew nearly half the world's cocoa in 2023/24
Two West African countries lead global cocoa bean production by a wide margin, with Côte d'Ivoire alone growing more than a third of the world's beans.
In the 2023/24 cocoa year the International Cocoa Organization estimates Côte d'Ivoire grew 1,674 thousand tonnes of cocoa beans and Ghana 449 thousand tonnes, a combined 2,123 of a world total of 4,368 thousand tonnes, or about 49 percent [S1]. Côte d'Ivoire by itself grew roughly 38 percent of the world's beans, ahead of Ecuador, Nigeria and Cameroon. Africa as a whole grew 3,114 thousand tonnes, about 71 percent of the global crop [S1]. One honest caveat: 2023/24 was a sharply reduced harvest after disease and poor weather, so the two leaders' share was lower than usual. In 2022/23 they together grew about 58 percent of world output [S1], and ICCO reports the global crop recovering in 2024/25 [S2].
