Source: GSMA, World Bank · 2025 for GSMA figures. World Bank Findex account ownership is the 2024 survey round · Shares are GSMA's Africa-wide figures for 2025. Sub-Saharan Africa makes up nearly all of Africa's mobile money activity.

Mobile money in Sub-Saharan Africa processed about US$1.4 trillion in 2025, up 26% on the year, with 1.2 billion registered accounts and 341 million active 30-day accounts [S1]. Africa drove roughly two-thirds of the US$2.1 trillion that moved through mobile money worldwide in 2025 and held just over half of all registered accounts [S1]. Growth is fast: the Sub-Saharan Africa figure was US$1.1 trillion in 2024 [S2]. The honest caveat is that GSMA reports the 66%, 59% and 52% shares for Africa as a whole, not Sub-Saharan Africa alone, though the sub-region is nearly all of it. Survey data agrees the base is wide: about 40% of Sub-Saharan African adults held a mobile money account in 2024 [S3].
